Macomb County Commission Chairman William Crouchman says about 250 employees, or 10% of the county workforce, could be laid off soon.

The commission is trying to find about $20 million in savings before its December 31st budget deadline. Crouchman says the county is currently in mediation with its union in order to get concessions.

"Asking for a $10 co-pay on a prescription instead of a $5 I don't think is unreasonable... and things such as that. We are also looking for some relief on retirement costs. As it is now, it's possible for an employee to retire at age 50. Of course when an employee retires at age 50, you have a life expectancy of 80-something. Plus, the health care during that whole period of time. So, these things have got to change. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask employees to have a minimum retirement age of 55 or 60."

Over the last several months, the Board of Commissioners has trimmed about $14 million from a $34 million deficit, which includes the elimination of the Macomb County's Parks and Recreation Department.
